Amrita Datta (she/her)

Amrita Datta is a faculty of Visual Communication Design at Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, Indiana. Datta’s research focuses on people-centered design approaches to investigate cross-cultural design identity. Datta has used design as a platform to design with people instead of designing for people through collaboration with community partners in Indianapolis to implement ideas that address strategic and conceptual goals. She has facilitated workshops, including the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Department to drive a design thinking discussion and culture for a non-designer audience. She has also worked on community-engaged projects with insurers and diverse congregational partners with the aim to strengthen public interest in the Healthy Indiana Plan and the shared responsibility of supporting continuous health coverage for better wellness and care among Hoosiers.

Datta received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Kent State University in the Department of Visual Communication Design with a concentration in user-experience design. Shortly after, she moved to Indiana to pursue her Master of Fine Arts degree at Indiana University (Indianapolis) to major in Design Research and Strategy with expertise in design thinking and product development. She has been facilitating programs with schools in South Korea, Germany, and India to explore more opportunities for cross-cultural experiences for her undergraduate students and working towards achieving the integration of DEI experiences.

Datta’s experience working in India, the Czech Republic, and the United States have provided her with incredible opportunities that include: showcasing her design vision, recognizing consumer trends, and learning design practices. She believes her exposure to techniques including user-experience design, branding development, experimental graphic design, and connected product interfaces has enabled her to quickly contribute to any design-oriented task. Datta’s research has been peer-reviewed nationally and internationally through professional publications in AIGA’s SHIFT{ed} Summer Summit 2021 and the International Association of Societies of Design Research (IASDR 2021).
